A must read post for the social entrepreneurs and enterprises out there | SSE’s Nick Temple is really starting to kick butt with his blog. In one of his latest entries he looks at the resources and reasons for social anything to to get into blogging (or not).
I would add to this by saying to most nascent and established social enterprises > DITCH YOUR WEBSITE*. Why? Because it probably stinks metaphorically and otherwise. Two questions to ask yourself: (1) does your website look more like a techno geek designed it or someone from the IDEO team. (2) does your website have current information in an easy to read format? I am guessing its the former on the first questions and sort of for the 2nd question. Do you really want funders, customers, or anyone else’s first impression of your organisation to be this bad? (if you answered that you didn’t care, please apologies to the recipients of your social mission—you are selling them short!)
A 3rd question, what’s your budget? If you answered – what budget? … get a blog.
I have begun recommending the use of blogs to everyone who will listen. Not just as an outlet for communication with their audience, but as their main website.
>It’s cheaper. (less than £5/month with your own domain)
>It’s easier. (can you use a browser, you are blogging)
>It’s more organic. (it is more grounded than a website)
>It’s more communicative. (see: weblog)
>It’s everyone. (multi-author ability keeps it honest)
>It’s professional or whatever looking for little money. (templates are better than most website templates)
(*I say ditch your website unless you can spend north of £10,000 to get a nice layout and an easy news updater)
