We dislike the description of us as consultant. Not because it is inherently negative in connotation, but because it describes only 5% of our activities. Here is the typical definition.
consultant n. One who gives expert or professional advice. One who consults another.
When used correctly, consultants can add incredible value. Most of the negative comments I used to make and hear are derived from situations where the advice was bad, the use was silly, or both.
Most of our work, and clearly the stuff that drives us, is about instigating, development, and doing. What’s the word that describes this activity? We tried developers, but we all know this is either one notch above (or below depending on your perspective) consultant. Perhaps we should forget the names. But, people want to understand and immediately classify.
Jonathan, a partner of ours, described our work as venturing. Hmmm. Interesting. I suggest we make up a name for what we do, but that may add to the confusion. Something to think about…
