Giving should be rewarded, right?

Giving should be rewarded. Err. Not?
I fall down on the side of reward. It is silly to think the very rich are simply going to give their money away for free and it is wrong to compare arts to aids. I do think the balls they throw (and I have been to a few) are a waste of money. Why not have a personal dinner with your prospective donors, spending loads less and making more impact. Does a charity event for 400 persons really achieve much?

I think you are confusing two types of potential ‘giver’. The Summer Ball is a great way of getting new potential givers to know that you exist. It turns ’strangers’ into ‘prospects’.
You can always invite prospects and existing givers to a much more focussed event designed to help them ‘buy into’ what you are about and establish (hopefully)a much longer term and more strategic donor relationship.
