I just spent 24 hours (or nearly) with a collection (13) of the largest Development Trusts in the Yorkshire & Humber. I came away more energised about the movement. I was in attendance as a partner (The Camberwell Project), so it did feel a bit like crashing a wedding with many of the attendees catching up with good friends from other trusts. But, in the end, I did meet some interesting and inspiring leaders of substantial trusts who did make me feel very welcome. I was particularly inspired by the story from a guest speaker trust, Anne Dannerolle, (of Hull Community Church). Yes, a church. They can only be an associate member given their religious affiliation, but the DTA is better for including them. Her story caught my attention because they were a small group of people doing amazing things in their neighbhourhood and taking risks to make things happen. When they were 1/2 way to their goal of £2M for a new centre, they started construction! A calculated risk, but a risk nonetheless. And you know what happens when you take action, people notice and they take action. By starting their project, they quickly attracted the remainder of the funding. Anne says it may have been faith, but I reckon it was some clever, hard working people who realised that action begets action.
Other highlights from my time with the DTA included the global market meets high street ponderings of Hugh Rolo (Investment Manager), the informational roundtable, and a open and frank group conversation with Tom Riordan (CEO, Yorkshire Forward). There was much discussion about asset transfer, business support and roles of the "community anchors". I hope I get a chance to get back next year.
