The Big Idea is… Small Simplicity.

Great advice from Rory Sutherland (at TED of course!) on how to change the world around you for the better implementing small stuff. Think about how we might approach a social enterprise venture, especially if it needs to stand out in the crowd.

Hmmmmm. He’s clever and speaks well in every sense – posh being one of those senses. This adds authority to what he has to say but I am not sure that that’s an awful lot. So, I have had a little go at it below but am quite happy to be educated on the presumably big thing I am missing.

Imagine that speech in a scouse accent with lots of hesitations; …not nearly the same impact – of course; that’s sort of his point – and mine. But his point is a thin one. ( Do something clever and small that makes a difference ..ok! and my point (also a thin one) is that were it not for the way he packages it, it wouldnt get a look in.

He is manipulating us – of course; the models on the train will hand out Chateau Patrouce (which plenty of us will never have heard of but will guess it’s an expensive wine); if we check our balance before we take cash out we are ‘anal’ , and so on. If we don’t line up with him we are not really ‘in’ on something. The message isnt really that significant – we are just treated to an engaging performance; ..Marketing observations 101.. and ‘light’.

All the guy is saying is that there are lots of tricks we can use either to improve things or to persuade people to consume more of a given brand. Plus, people and companies should look out for them. OK

Lots of companies are fully engaged in the detail of things – from the attention given to product design, to suggestion boxes – often with rewards offered – to invite input from people – perhaps employees – to suggest what can make the big effect at little cost.

Amazing what you can make a living from these days.

Perhaps I am being a bit of a stick in the mud but I found it all very clever and very trite at the same time. Oh, and I have seen him in another film with the same gags about the train to Paris and the supermodels and so on – so maybe I was a bit diasppointed at not getting much thats new. Plus the Diamond Shreddies thiing is nearly three years old now.
